Day 2 – Transfer to the airport for your flight to Iquitos and finally transfer to the river boat (4-Day Pacaya Samiria Cruise):
This three-night itinerary is ideal for those on a tight timeframe who want to enjoy an authentic and intense snapshot of natural and human life in and around the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Iquitos – Nauta – Marañon River
(Lunch & Dinner)
Our adventure starts in Iquitos city: after being welcomed at Iquitos airport, off an early flight from Lima, or at your Iquitos hotel, we make the two-hour bus ride to the port of Nauta to board La Amatista.
As the boat sets sail up the mighty Marañon River, we settle into our comfortable cabins and have lunch on board.
In the mid-afternoon, we arrive at the Amazon Natural Park, where we use canoes to explore the lagoon, which is a centerpiece of the Park, and contains numerous species of bird, monkey and iguana … not to mention, fish!
We return to the Amatista for a delicious dinner, and time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Amazon rainforest at night, for the first time.
Day 3: Amazon Natural Park – Yanayacu Pucate: Canopy Walk
The Amazon basin has many types of forest, flooded areas and highlands. Usually these are not close to each other, however there are some areas where they can all be appreciated in close proximity. So today we explore the jungle first at ground level, and then from a series of hanging bridges that extend over 300m / 1,000ft to give a magical view of the jungle canopy. Here, as well as the rich flora, many monkey, butterfly and bird species can be spotted.
Lunch today will be in a large gazebo, with a live band playing local music. This is followed by a shaman ceremony, which is a chance to see indigenous beliefs in the flesh.
Once back on the Amatista, we sail further up the Marañon River to Lost Creek. Here we take to our excursion skiffs to look for wildlife, and enjoy the sunset.
We have dinner on board, while sailing back downstream to moor in the Yanayacu Pucate region.
NB. This itinerary may vary depending on the weather and seasons that control the water level in the rivers and the wild life cycle to protect its natural habitat.
Visits to local villages are carefully planned to avoid a negative impact on their cultural identity.
Day 4 – Pacaya Samiria National Reserve: Amazon Culture
Today our highlight will be exploring the Pacaya Samiria Reserve through two of its black water tributaries, Yanayaquillo and Yanayacu Pucate.
Our guides will give us a quick briefing about the area, before we head off into the largest flooded forest in the country. This hidden jewel of the Amazon is a perfect hideaway for numerous species, including macaws, toucans, hawks, monkeys, sloths, iguanas and dolphins, all of which merge with the vegetation. The black water of this tributary can give the illusion of navigating over mirrors that reflect, not only the sky above but also the scenery with great detail.
Breakfast this morning is in the middle of this enchanted forest: we stop in a quiet spot to eat aboard our open skiffs, while pink and gray dolphins may swim curiously around; and there may also be time for a little fishing: piranhas and catfish are usually the catch of the day.
We return to the Amatista in the late morning, to relax and have lunch on board.
Along the banks of the Marañon River live ribereños, local people with a mixture of both Christian and local, traditional cultures. In their world view, trees have souls as well as humans and their everyday life still conserves many fascinating ancient customs.
So, this afternoon we get a chance to interact with the children of a small village, by sharing songs and games with them. One of the first things we notice is how charming and eager to learn these children are; while at the same time we learn about existence in Amazonia.
Day 5: Amazon River – Nauta – Iquitos
After breakfast on board, we disembark in Nauta, and then make the return trip by bus to Iquitos. Once there, you will be transported to the dock to board your boat for a scenic trip to your Amazon River Lodge.
Amazonia’s main lodge on the Tahuayo River is rustic, yet comfortable. There are fifteen cabins; some are honeymoon cabins, with a king-size bed, others are cabins with two beds and a few are family style cabins with one large bed and several single beds. Half of the cabins now have new private bathrooms. The other half of our cabins have shared bathrooms. Cabins with private bathrooms are assigned on the basis of earliest reservation.
Each cabin is raised above the jungle floor on stilts and is connected to other buildings of the lodge by a raised boardwalk. Other buildings include a modern kitchen built to the highest standard of sanitary food preparation, dining hall, areas to socialize and relax and a conservation education laboratory with library. The modern flush toilets and showers use a sanitary septic system. The water used in the plumbing comes from a well rather than water pumped from the river, which is typical of most jungle lodges. There is some electricity provided by solar panels and batteries, so guests can recharge camera batteries or use CPAP machine. Lighting is provided by soft LED lights rather than the more dangerous kerosene lamps used in most other lodges. Satellite based phone, internet, and e-mail service are available. The food is prepared by a culinary staff and is considered by our guests as delicious. Special diets can be entertained with prior notice. We have much experience in sanitary food and water handling and preparation and thus you can eat anything served at the lodge, even salads and unpeeled fruit, items that are not generally recommended for consumption by tourists in South America.
There is laundry staff and daily laundry service is provided for a small charge. We believe that this service is unique among jungle lodges. In addition to a comfortable stay at our main lodge, tourists can also stay 1 to 3 nights at our new Research Center Lodge, which is located in remote pristine forest. The Research Center Lodge also has comfortable amenities, such as beautiful cabins and satellite services.
Day 6 – Enjoy your time at the Lodge.
The lodge offers each person/couple their own personal guide, who will work with each guest to create their own jungle adventure. Some examples of things to do are, bird watching, swimming with the Pink Dolphins, zip lining the forest canopy, nature hikes into the jungle and they even post ideas daily for your enjoyment. How you choose to fill your time is completely up to you.
