Departing from your ship, your adventure begins with a scenic 30-minute motorcoach ride along the Dalmatian Coast. This part of the “Dubrovnik Riviera” is filled with beautiful contrasts–mountains and valleys, green hills and naked stone. Your first stop is the charming village of Trsteno.

With flora and foliage dating back to the Renaissance, the Trsteno Arboretum is believed to be the oldest in this part of the world. This extraordinary garden was started by a local noble family who had asked ship captains to bring them back seeds and plants from their travels. Today, its collection of exotic and decorative trees and shrubs includes over 300 species. In 1962, the Trsteno Arboretum was registered in the list of protected natural monuments as a monument of landscape architecture. During your hour-long visit, be sure to see the pride of the arboretum, two Oriental Plane trees located on the central market place of Trsteno. They are over 500 years old and are unique specimens of their kind in Europe.

Returning to your motorcoach, you’ll continue your scenic tour as you drive to the village of Ston. Your knowledgeable guide will give you a brief background about the town, pointing out its importance to the Ragusa Republic. Ston is famous for its great stone wall, believed to be the second longest behind China’s Great Wall. Ston’s wall was built to protect the town’s valuable salt works from intruders and pirates.

“Foodies,” however, may know Ston by its other claim to fame – its oysters. Once you learn about Ston’s history, you’ll then take a short trip to Mali Ston for a 50-minute motorboat ride and a chance to sample these famously tasty oysters on the spot, fresh from the water–a true treat!

Now that your appetite has been tempted, it’s time for a break and snack. You’ll be treated to some delicious local seafood, including more oysters and wine. Refreshed, you’ll return to your motorcoach for the picturesque ride along the coast and back to your ship.
